Your kitchen appliances work harder than almost anything else in your home. The refrigerator runs around the cock, the dishwasher handles a load or two a day, and the oven and stove top get fired up for everything from weeknight dinners to holiday feasts. Eventually, every one of them wears out. The question is when.
Knowing how long appliances last helps you plan ahead instead of scrambling when something quits at the worst possible moment. It’s also one of the most useful things to think about before a kitchen remodel, since the timing of your appliance replacements can shape your whole design. Here’s what to expect from each major appliance, along with the signs it may be time for a new one.
Refrigerator Lifespan

Most refrigerators last somewhere around 9 to 13 years. Simpler top-freezer models often land on the longer end of that range, while refrigerators packed with features like ice makers, water dispensers, and smart technology have more parts that can fail along the way.
Because a refrigerator never gets a day off, the warning signs tend to show up gradually. Food spoiling faster than it should, a motor that runs constantly, frost building up in the freezer, or condensation collecting on the outside are all clues that your refrigerator is struggling to keep up. If it’s reaching the 10-year mark and starting to act up, replacement often makes more sense than repeated repairs.
Dishwasher Lifespan
A typical dishwasher lasts about 9 to 12 years. How often you run it, how hard your water is (hyperlink), and how well it’s maintained all play a role. Homes with hard water, which is common across much of the Rochester area, can see mineral buildup that wears down parts over time.
You’ll usually notice a dishwasher on its way out before it stops completely. Dishes that come out cloudy or still dirty, water pooling at the bottom of the cycle, leaks around the door, and cycles that take noticeably longer than they used to are all signs worth paying attention to.
Oven and Stove Top Lifespan
Ovens and stove tops are some of the longest-lasting appliances in the kitchen. Gas stove tops often last around 15 to 17 years, and electric stove tops typically last about 13 to 15 years. Ovens fall in a similar timeframe, usually last 13 to 15 years.
With these appliances, age alone usually isn’t the reason people replace them. More often, it’s uneven cooking, burners that won’t light or heat evenly, an oven that takes forever to preheat, or temperatures that don’t match the dial. Sometimes it’s simply that the oven or stove top no longer fits the way you cook or the look of your kitchen.
Microwave Lifespan

Microwaves have one of the shorter lifespans in the kitchen, usually around 9 years. If your microwave is heating unevenly, making unusual noises, or taking longer to warm up food, it’s likely nearing the end of its run. Because countertop microwaves are relatively affordable, replacement is often a better option than repair.
Range Hood and Garbage Disposal Lifespan
The appliances you think about least can still wear out. A range hood typically lasts around 14 years, though fans and lights may need attention along the way. Garbage disposals usually last around 10 to 12 years, and signs like constant jamming, leaks underneath the sink, or loud grinding noise mean it’s probably time for a new one.
What Affects How Long Your Appliances Last
Every appliance is different, and the numbers above are general ranges rather than guarantees. A few factors can push an appliance toward the longer or shorter end of its lifespan. How much you use it matters, since a family or six will put more wear on a dishwasher than a couple will. Regular maintenance makes a real difference too, like cleaning refrigerators coils, clearing the dishwasher filter, and wiping down oven seals. The quality of the appliance and how well it was installed also play a big part in how long it holds up.
Repair or Replace?
When an appliance breaks, it’s not always obvious whether to fix it or start fresh. A good rule of thumb is to compare the cost of the repair to the cost of a new appliance, and then look at the age. If the appliance is more than halfway through its expected lifespan and the repair costs a significant chunk of what a replacement would, putting that money toward a new one usually makes more sense. Newer models are also typically more energy efficient, which can help offset the cost over time.
Why Appliance Age Matters When You Remodel

If you’re planning a kitchen remodel, your appliances deserve a spot in the conversation early on. Replacing a 10-year-old refrigerator a year after your new kitchen is finished can create headaches, especially if the new model is a different size than the opening in your cabinets. Planning your appliances alongside your kitchen design lets you size cabinet openings correctly, match finishes across the whole kitchen, and avoid tearing into brand-new work later.
It’s also a great chance to rethink how your kitchen works. Maybe you’ve always wanted a wall oven, a larger refrigerator, or a dishwasher placed closer to the sink. Building those choices into your layout from the start leads to a kitchen that looks cohesive and actually fits the way you live.
